Halloween: The Game Crossplay Not Working

Friends can appear in a party and still fail to reach the same match. Separate the advertised feature, the current reports and the limited workaround.

Crossplay is listed; successful party matchmaking is not guaranteed

Xbox lists cross-platform multiplayer, but early-access players report PC–Xbox party members being kicked during matchmaking. Community reports describe trouble joining friends. The September 5 hotfix does not name a crossplay fix. Some players report success inviting a friend directly into an available game lobby instead of relying on the party; this is a community workaround, not a verified repair or a guarantee.

Identify where joining fails

Record the point at which the two players stop sharing the same session. An invitation that never arrives, a party that forms but splits during matchmaking, and a match that loads with severe lag are different symptoms. One successful invitation does not prove the next transition works.

Editorial triage: record the failed transition before changing settings.

Try a direct game invitation once

The community workaround is to invite the friend to the game lobby after the host reaches it, rather than assuming the existing party will carry everyone through matchmaking. Reports describe joining an available slot; that slot can fill before the invitation is accepted. Other players still report failures.

Use this only as a low-cost experiment. It does not require deleting saves, unlinking platform accounts, buying another edition or disabling security software. This wiki has not hands-on tested the procedure, and menu labels can differ between platforms. If your build does not offer the relevant game invitation, do not substitute an account-management operation.

  • Both players check their platform for an available game update and restart after installing it.
  • Let one player reach a joinable game lobby and check that a slot is available.
  • Use the available invitation to that game, rather than sending another party-only invitation.
  • If both players connect, test the transition into the match before assuming the problem is resolved.
  • If it fails again, keep the exact error and stop repeating the same experiment indefinitely.

An installed hotfix is not proof that crossplay was repaired

Early Access Hotfix #1 names crash fixes, several challenge-tracking corrections, the offline login queue, Michael’s get-up prompt and a Series S rendering issue. Cross-platform invitations are not in that list. Updating is a sensible baseline check, but the note does not support telling players that the invitation problem is fixed.

The same announcement says a larger patch is being worked on without giving its date or a crossplay commitment. Community explanations involving platform certification or mismatched versions may be plausible, but the sources here do not establish the underlying cause. Check the developer’s dated announcements before treating a proposed launch-day patch as a promised solution.

Send a reproducible report instead of resetting your accounts

Use the developer support channels linked in Sources. Include both platforms, the PC store where applicable, the displayed build versions, who hosted, your region, the invitation method and the exact failure message. Distinguish a successful party join from a successful match join. If the result changes after an update, include the date and the before-and-after behavior.

Keep account identifiers and private invitation codes out of public screenshots. A short clip of the failed transition can help explain the sequence, but redact personal information before posting it. There is no evidence in these sources that deleting progression or purchasing Deluxe fixes matchmaking, so neither is a justified troubleshooting step.

Frequently asked questions

Is crossplay disabled for everyone?

The cited player reports do not establish a universal outage. They document particular PC–Xbox failures and inconsistent attempts; the store still lists the feature.

Does a private match fix the problem?

Not reliably. One cited thread reports connecting to a private match but experiencing severe lag. A successful private connection is useful diagnostic information, not proof that public matchmaking is repaired.

Does crossplay mean my progression carries between platforms?

No. Playing together and transferring a save or progression are separate capabilities. The sources here do not confirm cross-progression.
